The INPUT Project aims to contribute to the evolution of the Internet “brain” beyond current limitations due to obsolete IP network paradigms, by moving cloud services much closer to end-users and smart-devices.

This evolution will be accomplished by introducing intelligence and flexibility (“in-network” programmability) into network edge devices and by enabling them to host cloud applications capable of cooperating with and of offloading corresponding applications residing in the users’ smart objects and in datacenters, in order to realize innovative personal cloud services. This architecture will allow more attention to be placed on main technical challenges like energy efficiency, network programmability, the “softwarization” of the Internet of Things, network and datacenter virtualization, personal cloud services, etc.

1. For the end-users: Ownership of a multitude of telecom and media related end-devices (CPEs, set-top boxes, MP3 players, video player/recorder, gateways/sensors for energy management, etc.) that are costly, having short-life span as technology evolves and significant environmental impact.

2. For the Telecom Operators: Lack of a common platform allowing the support of existing and integration of emerging IoT/Cloud highly demanding services (e.g. tactile internet) with short time-to-market (in a cost and energy efficient way) to improve customer experience and increase revenues.

3. For the Service Providers: Lack of a common framework (standardized APIs/interfaces) to develop/integrate/offer new services to market.

Who is the service/solution designed for?: 

The Scientific Community (National and European Research & Innovation projects e.g., 5G-PPP) that could utilize the OpenVolcano as beta-users and contribute to:
1. Its validation in various scenarios/ various cloud services and
2. Its roadmap evolution (development of new features) towards commercialization.


Telecom Operators (mostly European) –upon availability of a commercial release- which could expand their role in the market value chain by offering:
1. Personal cloud services to individuals (and increase their ARPU)
2. New advanced hosting capabilities to third-party Service Providers.

How will your solution/service benefit the end-user? 

The INPUT Project aims to design a novel infrastructure and paradigm to support Future Internet personal cloud services in a more scalable and sustainable way and with innovative added-value capabilities.

The INPUT technologies will enable next-generation cloud applications to go beyond classical service models (i.e., IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS), and even to replace physical Smart Devices (SD), usually placed in users’ homes (e.g., network-attached storage servers, set-top-boxes, video recorders, home automation control units, etc.) or deployed around for monitoring purposes (e.g., sensors), with their “virtual images,” providing them to users “as a Service” (SD as a Service – SDaaS).

Virtual and physical SDs will be made available to users at any time and at any place by means of virtual cloud-powered Personal Networks, which will constitute an underlying secure and trusted service model (Personal Network as a Service – PNaaS). These Personal Networks will provide users with the perception of always being in their home Local Area Network with their own (virtual and physical) SDs, independently from their location.


The INPUT project designed the OpenVolcano platform, which is a holistic solution enabling the dynamic instantiation into the fog/mobile edge computing facilities of highly demanding personal cloud services by third-parties to end-users with guaranteed QoS/QoE, anywhere, anytime, while ensuring:
• confidentiality of sensible information (end-users, Telecom Operators and Service Providers),
• cost efficiency,
• high manageability and low complexity interfaces,
• energy efficiency,
• business viability (considerable traffic/revenues increase, competitive advantage, etc.),
• easy integration with Service Providers.

How can the solution/service help you become more efficient, more secure, faster or cost-effective?: 

The INPUT's OpenVolcano project is an open-source software platform realizing flexible SDN-driven Personal Networks (rendering end-user devices unnecessary) capable of hosting third-party Personal Cloud Services in fog/mobile edge computing facilities.

Ease in porting of third-party services benefiting from the existence of well-known state-of-the-art cloud interfaces and APIs (i.e., OpenStack-like).

Fully 5G-NFV ready.

Fully autonomous service and infrastructure management.

Advanced power management capabilities (compliant to the ETSI GAL v1 and to the upcoming v2 definitions).

Go to Market Strategy (AKA - Potential exploitation strategy) 

INPUT will follow a composite and complete exploitation strategy, including activities in the standardization arena, the set up of open source projects (mainly OpenVolcano and its modules), and the evolution towards future-proof NFV/SDN and fog solutions of different commercial platform (e.g., Ericsson NEtwork Management).

SME will actively contribute to these exploitation routes, and will benefit not only from the acquired know-how but also from the possibility of launching new products. Telecom Operators will benefit from the possibility of hosting new radicals value-added services, and to shift their positions in the service value chain.
